Poosanikai Thayir Pachadi / Ash Gourd Raita


Poosanikai Thayir Pachadi is a delicious South Indian style (Tamilnadu) recipe serves as a sidedish for white rice with any tamarind based gravy.. This is normally named as Thadiyangai thayir pachadi or Ash gourd raita, you can see this recipe in most of the tamilans marriage occasions.. So I wanted to blog this recipe for a long time.. 


This dish is easy to make and taste are so great to have.. Some people grated the white pumpkin and mix with curd, but here I cut them into strips and microwave for 5 mins and add in coconut masala, and some tempering items, mix well and then serve cool..

INGREDIENTS :

Ash gourd / White Pumpkin / Poosanikkai - 1 cup (chopped)
Curd - 1/2 cup
Salt - as needed

TO GRIND :

Coconut - 1/4 cup (grated)
Green Chilli - 4
Jeera / Cumin seeds - 1/2 tspn

TO TEMPER :

Oil - 1 tspn
Mustard - 1/2 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Asafoetida - a pinch

METHOD :

  • Remove the skin and center soft part, chopped into small pieces..
  • Take it in microwave safe bowl, Pop it microwave for 4 to 5 mins.. 
  • You can stir inbetween twice.. 
  • Now take masala ingredients in a blender and make it a smooth paste..
  • Then add it to the cooked ash gourd, add in salt and mix it well.
  • After they cool down, mix it with curd..
  • Temper the items given under " TO TEMPER" and pour it over the pachadi..
  • Mix it well, transfer them in a serving bowl..
  • Enjoy..


PICTORIAL :

 Take your ash gourd
 Cut them into small long pieces
 Take them in microwave 
 Pop it microwave for 5 mins
 Now take the masala ingredients 
 Take them in blender
 Grind into paste
 Now they are cooked well
 Add in masala paste
 Mix it well
 Add in salt
 Mix it well and allow to cool
 When they cool completely
 Add in curd
Mix it well
 Heat a pn with oil with mustard
 Add in urad dal, allow to crackle
 When they sizzle
 Add in curry leaves 
 A pinch of asafoetida
 Mix it well
 Pour it over the raita
 Mix it well
 Transfer them in a bowl
 Cool and serve
 Enjoy..
