Chow Chow Kootu / Chayote Kootu


Today post is simple chow chow kootu with moong dal recipe... Chow chow / Chayote is not liked by many including our family.. But i loved it with pulli kuzhambu, is a perfect combination for lunch recipe.. It goes well with poondu kuzhambu, vatha kuzhambu or any spicy kuzhambu.. I comfortable to make this kootu in pressure cooker but i always prefer stove top boiling for kootu recipes. . 


I make this simple kootu with moong dal / passi paruppu. Lentils are cooked and simmered in coconut masala and a tempering added in the end.. Somehow i have not posted one recipe with this vegetable so i decided to post this kootu just for you...

INGREDIENTS :

Chow chow / Chayote - 1 (big size, chopped)
Moong dal - 5 tbspn
Water - 1/3 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tspn
Salt - as needed

FOR MASALA :

Fresh coconut - 2 tbspn
Green chilli - 1 
Cumin seeds - 1/4 tspn
Garlic - 1 cloves

TO TEMPER :

Coconut oil - 1 tbspn
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tspn
Shallots - 1 (chopped)
Curry leaves - sping

METHOD :


  • Peel the skin and remove the seed and chopped into small tiny squares as desired..
  • Take masala ingredients given in the list " FOR MASALA" and make it a coarse paste..
  • In a pressure cooker add in chow chow, moong dal, turmeric powder, and water..
  • Pressure cook it for 2 whistle.. open it after pressure down..
  • Now mash it with ladle and add in masala and salt, mix well.
  • Keep it low flame for 5 mins till the raw smell goes..
  • Off the stove.. keep aside.
  • In a small kadai add in coconut oil and temper the items given in the list " TO TEMPER".
  • Pour it to the chow chow kootu..
  • Mix well and transfer to the plate..
  • Enjoy..


PICTORIAL :



Take your chow chow / Chayote
Chope them into tiny squares
Add them to the cooker
Add some moong dal
Some water
Turmeric powder
Pressure cook it for 2 whistle
Now it's done
Take masala ingredients in the plate
Add them to the blender
Make it a coarse paste
Mash it with ladle
Add the masala
Little salt
Keep in low flame for 5 mins
Till the raw smell goes
Heat a pan with coconut oil and add mustard
Add in chopped shallots
Few curry leaves
Pour them into the chow chow kootu
Transfer them into a serving bowl
Enjoy..

Cabbage Poriyal / Muttakos Curry


This is a simple version of cabbage poriyal that i learn from my aunty.. I prepared cabbage in 3 to 5 ways but this is one way that the poriyal is goes well with both rice or rotis and it is good for health.. It is very light and low calories dish with chapatis I hade it in the morning is a delicious breakfast combo... 


When we had tour to kodaikanal and enjoy the beautiful weather and excellent places.. we stay for 5 days with my son and daughter and it a excellent trip to my kids, they really enjoyed it.. when we return from the kodaikanal they sold the raddish, cabbage, carrot, chow chow in a road side shop.. the colour of the veggies attracted me to buy the vegetables.. When i saw the vegetables it is very fresh and neat so i buy all the vegetables...


When i cut them into two equal parts it is watery and fresh than the regular one which we buy in the markets.. So come to the recipe is simple and easy to make.. hope that you must try this recipe and let me know how it's turns out from you...

INGREDIENTS :

Cabbage - 1 (small chopped)
Green chilli - 4 (chopped)
Onion - 1 (sliced)
Coconut oil - 2 tbspn
Fresh coconut - 1 cup
Mustard seeds - 1 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Salt - as needed

MASALA :

Cumin seeds - 1/2 tspn
Garlic - 3 cloves 

METHOD :

  • Heat a pan with coconut oil, add in mustrad seeds, urad dal..
  • Allow to crackle and add in sliced onion, toss till transparent..
  • Then add in chilli and toss for 1 min..
  • Now add in chopped cabbage and toss well along with the onion.
  • Then add in water, salt and cover it with lid for 7 mins..
  • Inbetween the gap crush the cumin seeds and garlic and keep aside..
  • Now open the lid and give a mix and cook the water evaporate..
  • Add in crushed cumin and garlic and keep mixing for 1 mins..
  • When it almost done, add in fresh coconut and mix well.
  • Now it's done, serve hot.
  • Enjoy..

PICTORIAL :



 Prepare your veggies
 Heat a pan with coconut oil
 Add in mustard and urad dal
 When they crackle and add in onion
 Add in green chilli
 Toss it for 1 mins
 Add in cabbage 
 Mix it along with onions
 Add in little water
 Now add in salt
 Cover it with lid
 Now alomst done
 Mix well
 Take some garlic and cumin seeds
 Crush it lightly
 Add the masala to the cabbage
 Now add in fresh coconut
 Mix it evenly
 Transfer it to a serving bowl

Punjabi Mutton Curry / Spicy Mutton Gravy


This mutton curry is a great punjabi dish which makes with the finnest blends of spices... It is mouth watery earthy dish made with hot and spicy flavour thats makes you feel like you have a hearty meals.. It combinate excellent with the chapatis, rotis, white rice, briyani, parathas etc...


Roasted coconut masala gives a excellent aromatic flavour to the curry.. It is a popular non veg gravy that makes your meals perfect and mouth watering one.. The mutton is tender and the spices powder masala make the dish royal and you should never taste this curry in your life..

INGREDIENTS :

Mutton - 1/2 kg (boneless)
Onion - 2 (sliced)
Green chilli - 2 (slit)
Tomato - 2 (chopped)
Chilli powder - 1 tspn
Coriander powder - 1 tspn
Garam masala powder - 1 tspn
Fresh coconut - 1/2 cup
Coriander leaves - few (chopped)
Mint leaves - few (chopped)
Salt - as needed
Cinnamon sticks - 2
Coconut oil - 3 tbspn

METHOD :

  • Heat a pressure cooker with oil and add in cinnamon sticks..
  • Add in sliced onion and toss till transparent..
  • Then add in chilli and chopped tomatoes..
  • Toss it for 2 mins and then add in spices powder and salt..
  • Mix well till the spices blends well with the veggies..
  • Then add in mutton pieces and mix well.
  • Now keep the flame low and keep mixing till the mutton pieces change it's colour..
  • Add little water and close the lid and whistle for 4..
  • In between the gap till the mutton cooked..
  • In a kadai add in coconut and toss for 5 mins till light brown and make it a paste..
  • Now open the lid and add in coconut paste.. 
  • Cook it for 5 mins till the raw smell is gone.. 
  • Now add in coriander leaves and mint leaves..
  • It's done and serve with rice or chapatis...
  • Serve hot and enjoy...

PICTORIAL :



Take all your ingredients
Heat a pan with coconut oil
Add in cinamon sticks (sorry the pic is not clear)
Add in onion 
 
Toss well till transparent
When it changes it colour
Add in tomatoes and chilli
Toss well for 3 mins
Add in all spices powder
Add in little salt

Toss well till oil leaves the sides of the pan
Now look the mixture
Add in mutton pieces
Toss well till the mutton mix with the spices
Now it's done
Add some water
Pressure cook it for 4
Now open the lid and keep aside
Heat a pan with coconut and roast well till brown
(Sorry i forget to take pic) make it a paste
Add coconut masala to the gravy
Cook it for 10 mins low flame
Add in chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves
Transfer it to a bowl
Serve hot
Enjoy
