South Indian Style Vendakkai Pachadi / Okra Kichadi


This vendakkai Pachadi is famous recipe from the South Indian cuisine especially in Tirunelveli.... This pachadi is very easy, simple to prepare and tangy pachadi good to have with sambar lunch.. Usually the Tamil Pongal is in end of this week.. It is very traditional harvest festival celebrate in three days in the month of Thai month... (HAPPY PONGAL TO ALL YOU FRIENDS)


This recipe is famous in our tirunelveli hotel named Janakiram a vegetarian hotel, the friday lunch menu is sambar, vathakuzhmbu, avial, poriyal, pachadi, papadam, rasam, payasam, pickle.. My hubby favourite restaurant, he loves to have friday lunch menu in their when we are outing..  Already share the Aadi lunch menu with some recipe, but I missed this vendakkai pachadi on it..

INGREDIENTS :

Lays finger - 300 grams
Tomato - 2 (chopped)
Green chilli - 2 (chopped)
Raw mango - 3 tbspn (chopped)
Brinjal - 1 (chopped)
Shallots / Small onion - 3 to 4 (chopped)
Toor dal - 1/2 cup (boiled)
Sambar chilli paste - 1 tbspn
Fresh coconut - 1/2 cup (grated)
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tspn
Salt - as needed
Tamarind water - 1/2 cup (optional)

TO TEMPER :

Coconut oil - 1 tspn
Mustard seeds - 1 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Shallots / small onion - 3 (chopped)
Curry leaves - few

METHOD :

  • First chopped all the veggies and keep aside..
  • Prepare masala paste, cooked dal and keep aside..
  • In a pressure cooker add in dal, veggies, salt, masala, coconut, turmeric powder and mix well, keepaside.
  • Now make the tempering items by heat a pan with oil, add in mustard, urad dal, when they crackles..
  • Add in shallots and curry leaves, saute well till they transparent...
  • Now pour it over the pachadi and Now add in a cup of water or tamarind water (optional) to it..
  • Mix it well, pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistle and open the cooker and mash it well.
  • Check for the salt and spicy, and serve hot..
  • Enjoy..


PICTORIAL :

Take all your veggies and chopped it
Cook some dal 
Take all the veggies in
Add in salt
Add in masala paste
Add in fresh grated coconut
Add in turmeric powder
Heat pan with oil
Add in mustard seeds
Add in urad dal and allow to crackle
When they done
Add in onion and curry leaves
Toss well in oil
Till they became transparent
Now they are done
Pour it over the pachadi
Add in some water
Mix it well
Pressure cook it for 3 whistle
Open it and mash well
Now they are done, check for salt
Transfer them to a serving bowl
Enjoy..
