Allmost all indian homes have this mandatory ingredient stocked in their pantry..It's split yellow pigeon peas commonly called toor dal(thuvaram paruppu) in india... Every day indian cooking is never complete without these lentils.. In here our community in south india have a customized serving procedures in any festivals or special function primary serving of this simple toor dal is must then other kootu and kuzhambuvarieties are served behind..
Usually we served it with the Puli Kuzhambu, Poondu Kuzhambu and other tamarind based curry.. Or as plain with hot white rice But the rice should be hot enough to add a dollop of ghee to it.. and dal is added and mixed making it an extreme comfort food.. It is best for kids 3 to 7 years..So Ihope that you must try this recipe and let me know how it's turns out from you....

INGREDIENTS :
Toor dal / Thuvaram Paruppu - 1 cup (boiled)
Salt - as needed
Fresh coconut - 1/4 cup (grated)
Ghee - 1 tbspn (optional)
TO TEMPER :
Coconut oil - 1 tbspn
Mustard seeds - 1 tspn
Urad dal - 1 tspn
Shallots / Small onion - 3 (chopped)
Curry leaves - few
TO MASALA :
Dry chilli - 4
Cumin seeds - 1/4 tspn
Garlic - 2 cloves
Shallots - 6
METHOD :
- First grind the given in the list " TO MASALA " into a paste.. keep aside..
- Boil the Toor dal as per method given in my recipe... Keep aside..
- Heat a pan with coconut oil add in mustard and urad dal allow to crackle..
- Now add in chopped shallots and curry leaves and toss well.
- Now add in masala and toss along with the shallots for 2 mins, in low flame.
- When the raw smell is gone add in boiled toor dal and mix well
- When it bring to boil add in salt and give a mix..
- Now let it cook for 5 mins in low flame..
- Now add in fresh coconut and switch off the flame..
- Now add a spoon of ghee and serve hot..
- Enjoy with white rice...
PICTORIAL :
Take your masala ingredients
Now grind into a paste, keep aside
Take your ingrediens
Boil your Toor dal..
Add coconut oil to a pan
Add in mustard and urad dal
When it crackle add in chopped shallots
Add in curry leaves
Toss till golden
Add in masala
Toss for 2 mins
Add in boiled toor dal
Now give a mix
When it boil add in salt
Now it's done
Add in fresh grated coconut
Give a mix and switch off the flame
Add in a spoon of ghee
Give it a mix
Serve with rice
Enjoy..
