White Pumpkin (Thadiyankai) Kootu


This is a typical south indian recipe.. Usually I prepare white pumpkin with Mour kuzhambu which have already posted in my blog.. But this is a sidedish version of recipe with goes well with the side dish of tamarind based kuzhambu... It is very low in calories and it is used to treat for your obesity.. 



This kootu is best match with Pulli kuzhambu. Adding coconut to this kootu which gives a superb texture to the dish. So I hope that you must try this recipe and let me know how it's turns out from you...

INGREDIENTS :

White pumpkin / Thadiyankai - 1/2 kg (cutted into squares)
Channa dal / Bengal gram / Kadalai paruppu - 1 tspn
Rice flour - 1 tspn
Salt - as needed
Water - as needed

FOR MASALA :

Coconut - 1/2 cup
Green chilli - 2 nos
Garlic - 2 cloves
Shallots / Small onions - 6
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tspn

FOR FRYING :

Coconut oil - 2 tsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Small onions - 2 (chopped)
Some curry leaves

METHOD :

  • Soak the channa dal with water.
  • In a pressure cooker add chopped pumpkin, soaked channa dal and some water 
  • And close the pressure cooker and whistled it for 2, drained it and keep it aside.
  • Grind the grinding items which i have mensioned in the list "FOR MASALA" into a paste...
  • In a kadai add oil, mustard, urad dal, chopped onions, curry leaves and fried it over.
  • And also add boiled pumpkin, grinded masala,masala water, and salt..
  • Now mix it well, at last add rice flour and coconut to it and off the stove while keep mixing.
  • Then the kootu is ready to serve.
  • Enjoy..

PICTORIAL :


Take all ingredients
Soak channa dal
In cooker add pumpkin
Soaked channa dal
Some water to that
Whistle it for 2
Drain it and keep aside
Grind these items
Along with onions
Into paste
In a kadai add oil, mustard, urad dal
Small onions,curry leaves
Then add boiled pumpkin
Grinded masala
Add water to the blender and add it to the kadai
Season with salt
Toss it well
When it's done add rice flour
Off the stove
Add coconut too
Mix it well
Ready to serve
