Tirunelveli Famous Kootanchoru


KOOTANCHORU is the famous tirunelveli dish. I love this dish very much. I made this recipe with the help of my anty and i done this recipe. My family member really enjoyed it. This kootanchoru is highly balanced nutritious and healthy dish. Now a days our younger generation are not taking balanced vegetable diets and we also forgetting the goodness of older dish, to remember that kind of dishes i prepare this recipe. If you try this at your home and i hope your kids also like the kootanchoru.............

ENJOY THIS TRADITIONAL RECIPE.


Preparation time : 15 mins
Cooking time : 30 mins
Serve - 5 to 6
Item : Traditional

INGREDIENTS :

Rice - 11/2 cup
Half boiled toor dal - 1 cup
Water - 7 cup
Turmeric powder - 1 spn
Tamarind - a lemon size
Asafoetida - 2 tspn
Coriander leaver - few (chopped)
Salt as needed

FOR TEMPER :

Coconut oil - 5 spn
Mustard - 1 spn
Urad dal - 1 spn
Shallots / small onions - 7 (chopped)
Curry leaves - few

VEGETABLES :

Carrot - 2 (sliced)
Beans - 10 (sliced)
Potato - 1 (sliced)
Drumstick - 1 (sliced)
Raw banana / valakkai - 2 (sliced)
Board beans / avarakkai - 7 (sliced)
Chinese potato / siru kizhangu - 5 (sliced)
Raw mango - 1/2 (sliced)
Tomato - 2 (sliced)
Green chilli - 5 (sliced)
Brinjal - 8 (sliced)

FOR MASALA :

Red chilli - 10
Garlic - 3
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Shallots / small onions - 15

METHOD :

  • Grind the ingredients listed into a coarse form.
  • Wash the toor dal and boil it is half cooked.
  • Soak tamarind in 1/2 cup of water and extract pulp.
  • Cut all the vegetables in to thin slices and wash well.
  • In a big vessel add water, rice and bring to boil for 10 mins.
  • Now add all the vegetables to the rice mixture.
  • Add in salt and turmeric and close the lid and boil it till done.
  • Now open and add asafoetida to the rice, 
  • Now add tamarind water and masala together in a bowl and mix it well.
  • Pour the mix to the rice and add boiled dal to the rice mixture.
  • Allow to boil in a low flame.
  • In other stove temper the items which mensioned in the " for temper".
  • Then pour it to the rice and add in grated coconut and mix well.
  • Now add chopped coriander to the rice.
  • Add pour some raw coconut oil and mix it well and suddenly off the stove.
  • Now the highly nutritious kootanchooru is ready to serve with appalam.

Take masala items
Grind into a paste
Main ingredients
All the vegetables
In a pan add water
Add in rice
Bring to boil
Add all the vegetables
This too
Close it with a lid
Allow to cook for 10 mins
Add salt and turmeric 
Add in asafoetida
Leave it for 10 mins
Extract tamarind pulp
Add masala to that
Pour it to the rice
Add in toor dal
Mix well with the ladle
Add oil in a kadai
Mustard
Urad dal
Chopped shallots
Curry leaves
Toss it well
Untill it became brown
Add in coconut
And mix well
Pour temper items
Add in chopped coriander
Add in a spoon of raw coconut oil
Mix evenly
Serve
Have it with appalam
