Vazhaipoo (Banana Flower) Poriyal



Today's dish is vazhaipoo poriyal.Vazhaipoo is an excellent source of fiber.. In our family all of us love plaintain flower/ banana flower and we include it once every week... It has heathy benefits and rich in potassium, calcium, and iron and it is one of my families best recipe. 


Cleaning vazhaipoo is really a time consuming process but it is worth the effort, and it's a boring thing to do but really a healthy benefits apart from the fiber, it is said to be effective in treating excessive bleeding during menstruation...I am intrest to make this recipe because I love this stir fry very much with rice especially sambar..

INGREDIENTS :

Vazhaipoo / banana flower - 1 nos
Sambar masala - 1 1/2 tsp (chilli, garlic, cumin, shallots)into a paste
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Boiled toor dal - 1/2 cup
Coconut grated - 1/2 cup
Salt - as needed
Water - as needed

TO TEMPER : 

Coconut oil - 11/2 tsp
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Urad dal - 1/2 tsp
Shallots / small onions - 5 (chopped)
Curry leaves - few

METHOD :

  • Before you touch the fiower add oil on both of your hands throughly, It prevents your finger and nails turning black and ugly.
  • Seperates the edible flower parts by removing the petals one by one.
  • Clean the vazhzipoo by removing the stigma and plastic sheath from each petals.
  • After your done cleaning the florets, choped them finely and kept in water mixed with sour butter milk / curd to lessen the blacking effect.
  • Now drain the water, in a vessel add the chopped florets along with turmeric and salt.
  • Bring to boil and cook it for 15 mins.
  • After it cooked completely, drain the water using sieve. and press it with the back of the ladle, to drain excess water on the boiled florets. set aside.
  • Heat a pan with oil and add in mustard, uraddal, chopped onions, and curry leaves and saute well untill it turn brown colour.
  • Now add boiled toor dal, sambar masala, some salt. Toss well in the oil untill the raw smell is gone.
  • Now add cooked florets and stir for 3 to 4 mins till the moisture evaporates.
  • Add in grated coconut and stir well for 2 mins.
  • Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy it with sambar.


PICTORIAL :


 Take banana flower
 Peel and cut it off
 Wash well in warm water
 Now take your ingredients
 Add to a vessel
 Add in water
 Some salt
 Turmeric powder
 Bring to boil for 15 mins
 Drain it
 Press it with a ladle 
because the excess water will be fillter
 Now add tempered items one by one
 Add sambar masala
 Some boiled dal
 Toss well in the oil
 Add cooked florets
 Then some salt
 Mix it for 2 to 3 mins till the moisture evaporates
 Now add grated coconut
 Mix gently
Now it's ready
 Serve hot
